Sustainable Investment Forum Europe 2023

Event Summary

The 6th Annual Sustainable Investment Forum Europe, with official event partner UNEP FI, returned to Paris on the 9th May at the Pullman Eiffel Tower, and welcomed 303 attendees, 71 Speakers and 53 Partners.

Calculated Risk

Data abundance, opaque modelling and disclosure methodologies and the physical risks of climate change can lead investors to be immobilised and halt decisive action but there was a collective call for not letting perfect be the enemy of good. Calculated risks are increasingly necessary in a volatile ecological and geopolitical environment.

Bringing Biodiversity to Investment

Biodiversity loss has taken a back-seat for too long. Without drastic action, food-systems are at severe risk and one million species are at risk of extinction. Flora and fauna provide essential services to humanity without which we cannot survive and as such, inaction is a material risk. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a whole-society approach to bringing nature to the investment agenda.

What should Investors start doing

Move beyond reporting to action and break out of siloes. Define the challenges and opportunities for stakeholders to engage in decisive and accountable action pragmatically. And as Make My Money Matter CEO, Tony Burdon notes, don’t forget humour. In order to avoid paralysis, we need to treat this as an opportunity for innovation and a better world.

UNEP FI Panel: Enabling the net-zero transition through sector engagement

Biodiversity is already having a material impact on economic activity-how to achieve better biodiversity integration across assets and portfolios-ensuring positive outcomes for mitigation and adaptation.

A continued loss of biodiversity could lead to environmental destabilization and, ultimately, ecological collapse and cause wide-reaching economic consequences for most investors.

The financial industry, must play a more active role. As a steward of global capital, it is uniquely positioned to help build an economy that works with, rather than against, nature.
