What is London Climate Action Week?
The inception of London Climate Action Week (LCAW) dates back to 2019, and since then, has been an annual summer event. London Climate Action Week is regarded as a monumental event that reverberates across the globe. The annual week-long series of events, discussions, and initiatives brings together policymakers, activists, scientists, business leaders, and citizens from all corners of the world to address the urgent need for climate action.
What happened during London Climate Action Week 2023?
Against the backdrop of escalating climate crises and the pressing call for decisive measures, London Climate Action Week emerged as a beacon of hope and determination in the battle against climate change. Integral to London Climate Action week 2023 was the recognition that the window of opportunity to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming was rapidly closing. With each passing year, the impacts of climate change are becoming more pronounced, from extreme weather events to biodiversity loss, rising sea levels to displacement of communities. The need for coordinated, ambitious action was undeniable, and London Climate Action Week aimed to galvanise such action on a global scale.
A highlight of London Climate Action week 2023 was the unveiling of ambitious new initiatives and commitments by governments, businesses, and civil society organisations. Countries announced updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with more ambitious targets for emissions reduction, while companies pledged to decarbonise their operations and supply chains. Financial institutions promised to increase investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and clean technologies, recognising the risks posed by climate change to global financial stability.
As London Climate Action Week drew to a close and participants looked forward to New York Climate Week, COP15 and COP28 in Dubai, there was a palpable sense of momentum and determination among participants. While the challenges ahead remained daunting, there was also a renewed sense of possibility and optimism. The commitments made and partnerships forged during the week provided a foundation for accelerated climate action in the years to come and as London Climate Action Week 2024 approaches.
What Flagship Forums are at London Climate Action Week?
At the heart of the week, Climate Action was pleased once again to host the Climate Innovation Forum for 1,174 stakeholders. World leaders attended the high-level summit and keynote speeches underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and political will in driving the transition to a low-carbon future. Setting the tone for the week at the mid-point, the summit emphasised the interconnectedness of climate action with economic prosperity, business supply chains, social equity, and environmental sustainability.
During the Climate Innovation Forum, the activation of the five-metre tall Climate Clock at the Guildhall triggered the launch of 150 climate clocks across London and major cities nationwide, emphasising the urgency of taking action to combat climate change. The Climate Clock was activated by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and attended by His Majesty King Charles III, signalling the unprecedented mobilisation behind this timely and important campaign to halt emissions and prevent global warming from rising above 1.5°C.
